I love George Gently Review by catacatgirl
... and I love the accent, OMG, the gorgeous Geordie accent, the entire north-east of England, the entire north, aaaaaaaaaah, so gorgeous! The gorgeous settings, the gorgeous filming, the gorgeous recreation of the time period, the interest of the topics dealt with, the depth of the characters, ... A great detective show, with two excellent leads - who are such "characters"!
Highly recommendable. Also highly educational for us Americans... Apart from all the UK / NE / Geordie slang and general sayings & wonderful vocab, there's also such memes, trivia, information and topics as: "the song of potato Pete", "Let me die a young man's death" --> Roger McGough --> Lancashire --> Merseyside --> Merseybeat, which also leads you to Dylan Thomas' "Do not go gently into that good night", Svengali, Skelton Beck, Saltburn Gill, UGM-27 Polaris, "Reds under the bed", Northumbria vs. Northumberland, Tyneside, pit villages, collieries and the mining trade & work conditions, the Bevin Boys, the Jarrow March, the CND, "Saint and Greavsie", Somerset House, Notting Hill Riots, etc. etc. etc. ... Excellent viewing Review by David
Martin Shaw does his usual professional job on this role, ably supported by Lee Ingleby. The values depicted could well be adopted by the modern police services! (Posted on 02/01/2010)
Fantastic Show! Review by AndPeg
We loved the 3 George Gently stories and are hopeful to see many more. They are well written and the two main characters are outstanding. (Posted on 07/12/2009)

great programme Review by Stevethebuilder
By far the best new detective series that has been on BBC for a very long time. Martin Shaw plays George Gently with perfect understatement. Great storylines, wonderful acting, a real sense of nostalgia.

Gently represents the last of the Dixon of Dock Green generation and he fights a low-key battle against the brutality of the sweeney-style policing which would dominate the 1970s and 80s. Many of the themes which were laid on with a trowel in Life on Mars are re-visited here, but they are done with subtlety and a hint of nostalgic affection. Gently is also an interesting character in his own right, and there is a fascination in watching his personal history be revealed.

But overall, George Gently adds up to thoughtful, mature entertainment. It's not particularly pulse-raising but its the mysteries kept us guessing (wrongly...) for most of the show. Definitely worth catching a couple of epiosdes to see if you like the style: we'd buy the series to watch again at our leisure.
