More Info

Marcus (Tom Rosenthal), Stylax (Joel Fry) and their lazy slave Grumio (Ryan Sampson) live in a grotty apartment block run by a dodgy Landlord (Karl Theobald) and work in dead end jobs for a ruthless boss Flavia (Doon Mackichan). But when a couple of fit Britons Cynthia (Sophie Colquhoun) and Metella (Lydia Rose Bewley) arrive in the neighbourhood things start to look up. Also featuring cameo stars including Danny Dyer; from orgy etiquette to being bashful down the bathhouse, this is Ancient Rome like you’ve never seen before.

Meanwhile in Series Two, Stylax wants to become a champion charioteer. Who cares if he doesn’t own a chariot and can’t drive? Their fearsome boss Flavia and water-pouring colleague, Aurelius (Tom Basden) torment them at work. While at home, business is booming for their dodgy Landlord who is now accompanied by massive henchman, Davus (Tom Davis). Guest Stars include Simon Callow, Shaun Williamson, Lauren Socha, Tim Key, and James Fleet.

In Series Three our resident Plebs are residents of a squalid block overseen by a ruthless Landlady (Maureen Lipman). They work dead-end jobs and, with the Games in town, can’t get tickets for any event – not even the pig chase. But an encounter with a very Gallic activist, Delphine (Bella Dayne) might at least improve Marcus’ romantic stakes. Could she become his Gaul-friend? As well as their regular nemeses, this year our Plebs encounter a legion of new Roman recruits including visiting parents (Samantha Spiro, Danny Webb, Steve Edge), a brazen Vestal Virgin (Michelle Keegan), a theatrical grande dame (Miriam Margolyes) and an ancient weatherman (David Bamber).

Series Four sees the sudden departure of Stylax and equally sudden arrival of dappy blonde builder Jason (Jonathan Pointing) throws the Plebs into turmoil. But hope arrives in the form of an abandoned toilet from crooked property developer Crassus (Robert Lindsay) which they aim to convert into Rome’s hottest new wine-bar – ‘The Crown and Toga’. This could be their chance to finally hit the big time, but first they have to grapple with Rome’s leading food critic (Annette Badland), launch a cabaret night with a scathing satirist (Aisling Bea), take part in the city’s Marathon and host a snail-racing syndicate – before coming up against their biggest challenge so far, an aggressive take-over bid from a local Germanian bar famous for their popular brown-liquid ‘beer’.
