The Driver on DVD

After taking US TV by storm in AMC’s wildly popular The Walking Dead, David Morrissey is back on the BBC and intense as ever.

In the States, they know him as The Governor, but now we’ll know him as The Driver.

A three-part drama series written by Danny Brocklehurst, The Driver stars Morrissey as a taxi driver, whose life is turned upside down after he accepts an offer to be a driver for a criminal gang. It’s a decision which sets in motion a series of devastating events and put his family’s lives in danger.

Brocklehurst is the award nominated writer of brilliant British shows like Clocking Off, Exile and the International Emmy winning Accused. Every episode is directed, meanwhile, by Jamie Payne who is known for blockbusting telly shows like Doctor Who, The White Queen and The Hour.

The Driver’s real strength however, is arguably its heavyweight cast, led by Morrissey and also featuring Ian Hart, another Liverpool actor from the Harry Potter Series and Finding Neverland. It also boasts the incomparable Colm Meaney, the long serving icon of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Morrissey is an exec producer on the show. He recently also hit British screens in 7.39. A romance largely set on the protagonist’s daily commute. Here, the actor trades trains for cars. It’s not Fast and Furious, but it is gripping from start to finish. Earlier this year, Brocklehurst told the Radio Times how important The Driver was to him. He said: “The Driver is a passion project for me and I'm proud of the way it is both a character drama and a thriller.

"As with all my work there is a strong emotional core and it explores ordinary lives pushed into extraordinary situations.

"I have always wanted to work with Dave Morrissey, one of the UK's finest actors, and I'm delighted to be finally getting the chance. The entire cast is amazing and it is a privilege to have them on board."

The Driver also stars Claudie Blakley (What Remains, Pride & Prejudice) and Sacha Parkinson (My Mad Fat Diary, Coronation Street).
