It’s a hotly anticipated ITV crime drama, set against a gorgeous British backdrop and starring a former Dr Who -- but it’s not Broadchurch, it’s Safe House and it is available now at Acorn DVD.

Safe House stars Christopher Ecclestone as Robert, a former police detective who now runs a guest house in the Lake District with his wife Katy, whose retirement plans are altered by the visit of an old friend who needs a safe house for people in hiding.

The show marks the return of Christopher Ecclestone to British TV, as he continues a fine career which has seen him perform on the big screen and the small screen, on both sides of the Atlantic.

After locking down his first regular screen role, supporting Robbie Coltrane in Cracker, Ecclestone appeared alongside Ewan McGregor and Kerry Fox in cult thriller Shallow Grave. The film also announced the arrival of hot, young director Danny Boyle. Ecclestone would go on to work with Boyle again on the brutal and brilliant 28 Days Later.

Several other big screen roles have followed, including a foray into screen villainy for the blockbuster behemoth that is Marvel Studios. He played the evil Malekith in Thor: The Dark World.

But it is the small screen which has allowed the Salford native to do some of his best work and contribute to some of British televisions most challenging and thought-provoking work. He had roles in Clocking off and Flesh and Blood for the BBC, and played Steve Baxter, the son of God in religious epic The Second Coming. He also played a grieving father in real-life drama Hillsborough and he joined Mark Strong and Daniel Craig in classic series Our Friends in the North.

Ecclestone was also the man tasked with introducing Doctor Who to a modern audience, which he did with aplomb, albeit for a briefer stint than David Tenant would go onto enjoy.

Now, after starring in hit HBO series The Leftovers, in the USA, Ecclestone is back doing what he does best: thrilling audiences in dark and brilliant British telly.

He briefly showed up in Sky Atlantic drama Fortitude but it’s Safe House which marks his return to British TV as a leading man.

Safe House is a must for fans of shows like Broadchurch, The Missing and The Fall -- and it has something which none of those shows can boast: one Mr Christopher Eccleston.
