New Tricks Series 11 hit TV screens tonight and as always the show is a thoroughly Great British affair.

In the first episode of the brand new series, Gerry Standing (Dennis Waterman) goes back to his Bermondsey roots to help arrange his daughter’s wedding. Of course, nothing runs smoothly for these whipsmart old coppers, so a trip home leads Gerry to an all-new case.

Standing has to investigate the possible murder of a young architecture student. But if that wasn’t tricky enough, the victim is the grandson of an old friend.

“Rough corners” is how Gerry’s new son-in-law describes his home town in Surrey.

“This is Bermondsey, not Baltimore” is Gerry’s stinging reply.

So what are the differences between the Bermondsey and the Maryland city? We dug up some facts on the two!

Bermondsey

  • Home of Shad Thames, the historic and beautiful riverside street next to Tower Bridge.
  • Also home to The Den, stomping ground of Millwall FC.
  • Birthplace of Jade Goody, David Haye, Tommy Steele and Michael Barrymore.

Baltimore

  • The largest city in the US state of Maryland and the 26th most popular in the United States.
  • Home of the Baltimore Ravens, NFL team and the location for classic American crime drama, The Wire.
  • The murder rate in Baltimore is eight times higher than New York City.

So Baltimore it ain’t, but Gerry still has his hands full on his back; and Standing isn’t the only member of the team tangled up in family ties this week, as Sasha Miller (Tamzin Outhwaite) is forced to work with ex-husband Ned (Barnaby Kay).
