Broadchurch has earned a place on the shortlist for the title of Best British TV Show of the last 20 years.

The smash hit crime drama, which recently kicked off its second series, beat a variety of classic shows to a place on the ten-strong list of nominees for the Timeline Award by Broadcast magazine.

Nominees were chosen by Broadcast readers from all previous winners at the Broadcast Awards, and the winner will be announced at this year’s ceremony. There is a place on the list for Big Brother but popular shows, including all soaps, talent competitions and panel comedies, are notably absent.

In 2015, Broadcast Magazine celebrates its 20th anniversary and the Timeline Award has been introduced to commemorate the occasion. Readers were invited to vote for the best shows to have won Broadcast awards in previous years. The winner will be selected by a panel of 400 television executives and announced at the ceremony next month.

Broadchurch

Broadchurch quickly made a big impression on viewers and TV writers when it premiered in 2013. Since then it has won numerous awards and spawned a big budget American remake. Broadchurch Series 2 is currently screening on ITV and is also available to pre-order from Acorn DVD.

The Broadcast Awards will be presented by David Walliams on 4 February 2015 at Grosvenor House in London. The show will celebrate “two decades of celebrating innovative formats, heart-breaking drama, rollicking comedy and sparkling entertainment”.
