Have you discovered A Place to Call Home? The popular, richly produced period drama has sometimes been crudely referred to as Australia’s answer to Downton Abbey, but this is superior TV in its own right.

Of course, there are similarities: a determined, almost contemporary heroine, a benevolent gentleman of the upper class and ruminations on class and religion set against the backdrop of idyllic period scenery and plenty of family trouble.

A Place to Call Home is currently one of the most popular titles available at Acorn DVD, as UK audiences stumble upon the sweeping romantic drama, through word of mouth and glowing reviews.

This is TV drama of rare vintage, with the same attention to detail, costume design and breathtaking visuals as some of TV’s most popular shows of the here-and-now; shows like Downton, Poldark and Indian Summers. And as with plenty of top telly programmes over the years, A Place to Call Home has experienced its fair share of drama behind the scenes.

Launched on Australia’s Network Seven in 2013, the show was an instant hit but when ratings dipped during a great second season, bosses decided to cancel the show. Despite retaining a decent viewership, Network Seven decided that the loyal following was largely made up of the 55 and over demographic, which wasn’t their preferred audience group.

A Place to Call Home was suddenly homeless.

But all was not lost, online petitions and viewer demand ensured that the show’s contract at Network Seven was renewed and a production deal was brokered with the Foxtel network to follow up with a third season, which is coming to the UK in 2015.

Season One and Two of A Place to Call Home are available on DVD right now at Acorn; just in time for a delicious box set binge in readiness for Season 3.
