No matter where we live, the rocky upheavals of Britain’s epic past are still with us – and still drive how we live today. Television favourites Julia Bradbury (Countryfile) and Hugh Dennis (Outnumbered) present the fascinating new BBC series The Great British Countryside that explores four stunning British landscapes.

For a country of its size, Britain has the biggest variety of geology on earth, which has created not only a beautiful landscape, but also a fascinating industrial heritage, a rich history and many legends. Hugh and Julia make brilliant guides in this great British adventure, which aired on BBC1 in February 2012 as a four-part series and now comes to DVD as a two-disc set.

Episode one follows Hugh and Julia as they venture across the most stunning parts of Cornwall. Hugh experiences the full force of the Atlantic as he gets his first taste of coasteering.  He also attempts to land on Britain’s scariest helipad. Julia finds out why Cornwall is a mecca for top surfers, and ventures to the spookiest part of Dartmoor, recently featured in Sherlock.

Episode two and our guides take to the Highlands of Scotland, Britain’s wildest – and oldest - landscape.  In this remote and magnificent part of the country, they explore a landscape built by volcanoes, earthquakes and ice, and discover how this dramatic past lives on today.  Hugh takes a breath-taking ride across Loch Ness and he reveals the astonishing story of how the ancient, ice-carved shape of the Highlands helped win the Battle of Britain. Julia takes to the air in an adventurous seaplane ride, to find clues to the Highlands’ turbulent past.

Episode three takes us to the South Downs. Hugh gets to grips with the chalk of the famous white cliffs, discovers how the South Downs’ rocky past created the perfect place for British hang-gliding and explores a vast hidden mine. Julia meets a giant of a racehorse, and finds out why it has grown so big on the chalky South Downs grasslands; and she discovers a strange rock, embedded in the soft chalk for millions of years, but which is as sharp as steel.

Episode four and it is Britain's biggest county - Yorkshire – right across the Moors and the Dales to the coast. Hugh takes the controls of a glider and gets winched down into one of Britain's largest potholes on the end of a rope – past the tallest unbroken waterfall in Britain.  Julia finds out how Yorkshire's rocks have turned Agatha Christie's handbag to stone, and how they produce mineral water.
