Aces High

Quick Overview

Digitally restored to make the quality of this incredible story even more enjoyable, Aces High is a 1976 film starring Malcom McDowell, Peter Firth, Christopher Plummer and Simon Ward. An innocent and trusting young officer fresh out of school school arrives on the Western front to fight the air war against the Germans. Unfortunately, the life expectancy of green pilots is not very good. Aces High tells the story of a Royal Flying Corps squadron in WWI during just seven days of battle. During this time, the high death rate of pilots has a huge effect on those remaining.

More Info

Aces High is set in a period of just one week, where life in a RFC squadron is documented and the pressure on the pilots comes to light. The background story starts one year earlier with fighter ace Major John Gresham (Malcolm McDowell) talking to a class of pupils at Eton College in October 1916. Fast forward to a year later, where new pilot 2nd Lt. Croft (Peter Firth) arrives at Gresham's base in France. Gresham depends on alcohol to deal with stress and continue flying, and the pressure of being accountable for the new recruit is an additional problem. When Croft eventually lands his first air victory, disaster strikes and everything changes for Gresham.
