Nicola Pagett (A Woman of Substance), stars as Anna Karenina alongside Eric Porter (The Forsyte Saga) and Stuart Wilson (To Be the Best) in this classic BBC adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s epic tale of passion set in late nineteenth century Russia.

Anna is young, vivacious, beautiful and resigned to a loveless marriage of convenience to a man twenty years her senior.  She moves in the highest circles of Czarist Russia and believes herself to be invulnerable to temptation.

But her life changes dramatically when she meets Count Vronksy who awakens her dormant passion and changes her life with ultimately tragic consequences.

Based on the classic novel by Leo Tolstoy, published in serial instalments between 1873 and 1877, it has been said that the first indication of the novel to its author was a dream which came to him of a bare, exquisite, aristocratic elbow.  From this was born one of the most exciting, conflicted and dramatic women created in world literature.

A sign of its universality is the oft-quoted opening lines of the novel: Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.

With consumer interest peaking around the theatrical release of the Joe Wright directed, Keira Knightley starring film adaptation, this powerful and compelling
TV dramatisation from 1978 returns to DVD, freshly re-packaged with glorious performances that more than do justice to the acclaimed novel.

Anna Karenina is so much better suited to be a leisurely, flowing TV serial than this rattling parade of telling postures and smart one-liners.” (taken from The Evening Standard's review of Anna Karenina (2012) starring Keira Knightley)
