Biography

As a young boy bought up in the English city of Leicester, Michael Kitchen showed an early talent for singing becoming head chorister in the Church of the Martyrs choir where he was a regular soloist. He went on to work with the National Youth Theatre and the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry before attending the Royal Academy Of Dramatic Art. Whilst studying at RADA he was discovered by top talent agent Peter Froggatt and won the Emile Littler Award for 'outstanding talent and aptitude for the professional theatre' in 1969.

Kitchen began to work regularly on British television from the early 1970s where he took roles in 'Play For Today', 'Thriller' and 'Beasts' before taking on the role of Martin in the original production of Dennis Potter's 'Brimstone and Treacle'. He followed this up with roles in Stephen Poliakoff's 'Caught On A Train', BBC productions of Shakespeare's King Lear and The Comedy Of Errors and, in 1993, he appeared in the BBC Police Drama 'Between The Lines'.

He has also had a prolific film career featuring in 'Out Of Africa' (1985), 'Fatherland' (1994), 'Proof Of Life' (2000), 'My Week With Marilyn' (2011) and as Bill Tanner in two bond films 'Goldeneye' and 'The World Is Not Enough'. However, his most enduring role came in 2002 when he took the role of Christopher Foyle in the ITV wartime crime drama Foyle's War. Eight Series later and Kitchen's starring role has become a household name and he has become a producer on the show.
