In the darkest Amazon, Lady Alexandra Lindo-Parker, on expedition for the British Museum to find the remains of a lost Edwardian explorer, runs into Hooten, a rough and ready, uncompromising American treasure hunter with a tragic past and occasional charm. They immediately and utterly fail to get on, but expediency and danger keep them together.
As Hooten and Alex battle through snake-filled jungle, we learn of Hooten’s mysterious past and Alex’s impending nuptials to vet Edward, and an unlikely bond is formed –well, sort of. Uncooperative native tribes, dodgy locals, and an untrustworthy Frenchman, lead them to discover the greatest prize of all, the lost city of Z –El Dorado, the city of gold.
They may bicker, they may fight, but together they have the skills necessary to uncover what the Museum - and Lady Alex - finds of interest. Hooten would rather have the money - or so he says. But as his story unfolds, we learn the nature of his tragedy.
