This film was inspired by the real life journals of the two explorers who travelled through the Columbian Amazon during the last century in search of the sacred healing and difficult to find psychedelic Yakruna plant. Filmed in black and white, Embrace of the Serpent centres on the Karamakate, an Amazonian shaman and the last survivor of his people, and the two scientists who built up a friendship with him.
Shot through Karamakate's eyes, the film bears witness to the effects of colonialism, religion and the exploitation of rubber, that affect indigenous traditions and the environment to which they are inextricably linked.
